P1: IDENTITES FOR THE MULTIVERSE
Develop a flexible identity system for a culturally significant site.
You are tasked with creating a socially and culturally responsive system to your site’s ethos, data, memory, history, and future. How might design communicate the visual plane
(x-axis, y-axis) as well as the memory plane (z-axis) of a place?
Just like the CMOA or CMNH, the audience for your project is the public who would visit the site. Your research will further define this factor.
Your final identity system must include the following:
- Keywords / Principles: 5-7 keywords words that guide your concept
- Concept Statement: 1-3 sentences summarizing the story, meaning, metaphor, and/or reasoning of your identity system
- Logo Suite: mark, primary logo, secondary logo, and stacked logos in static and kinetic formats with b/w (greyscale) and color options
- Identity Standards: identification and visual explanation for the typography treatment (styling and hierarchy), color, image treatment, and usage (grids)
- Application: a collection of visual examples of your identity system in-use which demonstrate the systems intended use in a range of physical and digital scenarios
You should be curious about your chosen site. The only restriction is that it should be culturally significant and relatively easy to find information (text, images, etc.) about its social systems, history, use, and meaning. An index of recommended UNESCO World Heritage sites can be found in our Google Drive and Are.na.
The final review will be Thursday February 27, 2025.
This project is broken into a sequence of “Rounds,” which aim to help and support the development of your project and further detail expectations for each class. Failure to meet these progress markers will make it challenging to complete the project successfully, ultimately impacting the final evaluation of your work.
It will be required to submit work during and at the end of the project via Google Drive. These expectations are detailed by Round and will include the following:
- Process: submission of contact sheets, documentation of sketches, concept proposal (.pdf), documentation of refinement
- Final Artwork: submission of static working file (.ai) for identity system, kinetic outcomes (gifs/mp4’s)
- Final Presentation: link or pdf to final presentation
- Style Guide: final .pdf
This project spans half a semester. So, your process is expected to be thorough, and the outcomes (a final presentation and style guide) should be very well-considered and executed.
